MacDiarmid Sails - Technology

MacDiarmid Sails has been at the forefront of advanced sail design and manufacturing since the early 80's when Ian was one of the first in the industry to employ computer aided design (CAD) into sailmaking. The software transformed the way sails were designed, leading to higher performing sails. In 1986 Ian installed the second automated plotter in the industry at his Lane Cove loft and a year later in 1987 he installed the industries first ever Laser cutter. Interfaced with his sail design software. sails were now able to be completely computer designed and cut, paving the way for the future of Sailmaking. With the Laser cutter and CAD asthe back bone of the company Ian other sailamkers were tapping into his resources and ordering designed and cut panels.

Over the years the laser cutter has been regularily updated and was recently completly overhauled and still offers a level of accuracy unrivaled in sailmaking.

Along with the upgrades to the cutter, Ian has been at the forefront of sail design technology and was heavily involved in the development of the SMSW software over a 30 year period before recently changing over to the "Azure Project" software, the most technologically advanced sail design software available.
